I’m Not Everything I Want to Be

A film by

Czech Republic, Slovakia, Austria / 90' / 02/2024 / documentary

After the Soviet invasion of Prague, a young female photographer strives to break free from the constraints of Czechoslovak normalization and embarks on a wild journey towards freedom, capturing her experiences on thousands of subjective photographs.

“This film is as much a tribute to the artistic process and curiosities of a photographer as it is a revealing portrait of her existence, forming an unconventional but deeply moving coming-of-age story.”

Press quotes

“one of the most profound, engaging documentaries I have seen in a long time”
Review: Martha Bird – Film Fest Report

“formally ambitious and accomplished — creative nonfiction at its best”
Review: Alex Heeney – Seventh Row

“This film is as much a tribute to the artistic process and curiosities of a photographer as it is a revealing portrait of her existence, forming an unconventional but deeply moving coming-of-age story.”

“Honest and forthright, and genuinely bold in both conception and execution, Tasovská achieves something quite special with I’m Not Everything I Want to Be, a film that is both intimate and sprawling in vision, and a tremendous odyssey into the trials and tribulations of a true pioneer.”
Review: Matthew Joseph Jenner – International Cinephile Society

“It brings out the cinematic qualities of the photographs themselves and their ability to document a life through its ambivalences.”

“I’m Not Everything I Want to Be returns to dualities and dilemmas again and again, but always remains faithful to the painful realisation that, for Jarcovjáková, being who she is (a non-conforming artist) was already a dilemma.”
Review: Savina Petkova – Cineuropa
